Memory and Meltdown
Children may not recall and connect consequences, making it more difficult to learn from experience in order to adjust for future situations.

Anticipate difficult situations when possible, and provide immediate cues or reminders to help prevent meltdowns | Example: If we know incidents occur frequently while walking down the hallway, then provide reminders for what to do (“Oh, remember to walk with hands clasped behind your back”), as well as cues during the event (“keep the hands back there, 2 more minutes, you can do it”) |
Tie in past experiences to help connect consequences for current situations | Cueing & connecting consequences Motivation & consequences |
Prior to escalation, ask guiding questions to help the child internalize and remember what to do | Example: On the way to recess, ask: “If a friend does something we don’t like on the playground, do you remember some things you can do?” |
